Start with the required capacity
Air conditioners are rated in kilowatts. As a general guide, a small bedroom up to 20 m² may require 2.0–2.5 kW, a medium room of 20–40 m² around 3.5–5.0 kW, and a large open-plan area 6.0 kW or more. Ceiling height, insulation, glazing, orientation and occupancy all affect the result.
Choose the right system
Split systems suit individual rooms, multi-splits serve several rooms with one outdoor unit, and ducted systems provide whole-home heating and cooling with a clean appearance. Portable and window units can suit short-term needs but are typically less efficient.
Consider efficiency and climate
Modern inverter systems adjust their output to demand and can provide steadier temperatures with lower energy use. In humid northern regions, dehumidification is especially important; in southern states, reverse-cycle systems offer a practical all-in-one solution.
Installation and maintenance
Installation should be completed by a licensed technician. Good outdoor-unit positioning, clean filters and regular servicing all support performance, air quality and equipment life.
